SILENCE = COMPLICITY

Akron City Council voted to hold police officers criminally liable if they if they witness unlawful use of force and do not intervene or report it.

The addition to prohibited public safety practices is a response to the outcry over the death of George Floyd.

GET YOUR KNEE OFF OUR NECK

Historic uprisings are sweeping the country in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd.

While protests against state-sanctioned violence and racism are taking place in every state, Oregon’s are significant, as they continue to swell well beyond the Portland metro region, and in unprecedented numbers.

Now, a state whose constitution once banned Black people from living within its borders is seeing its largest demonstrations calling for their liberty. And some Black Oregonians are seeing opportunities for reform.

Jah’di Levvi, 30, has been marching in the streets every night since the demonstrations began.

He said that he hadn’t been to a protest in about five years — the last time was following another murder — but after witnessing Floyd’s execution online, he was moved into action.

“That image of the knee on his neck sent me over the edge. I was like, there’s no way I’m not going to protest.”

Now he finds himself organizing with the newly formed Portland Civil Rights Collective, helping lead the group he estimates to be around 150 strong take to the city’s streets, parks and bridges each night in the name of justice.

REV AL SHARPTON SNAPS THE BALL TO COLIN KAEPERNICK

Reverend Al Sharpton called for the NFL to bring back quarterback Colin Kaepernick during his eulogy at George Floyd’s funeral in Houston.

“The head of the NFL said, Yeah, maybe we was wrong. Football players, maybe they did have the right to peacefully protest,” said Sharpton.

Well, don’t apologize. Give Colin Kaepernick a job back.

Don’t come with some empty apology. Take a man’s livelihood. Strip a man down of his talents. And four years later, when the whole world is marching, all of a sudden you go and do a FaceTime, talk about you sorry. Minimizing the value of our lives.

You sorry?

Then repay the damage you did to the career you stood down, cause when Colin took a knee, he took it for the families in this building. And we don’t want an apology. We want him repaired.

STEPHEN MILLER: White Nationalist Puppet

In the run-up to the 2016 election, White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller promoted white nationalist literature.

Hatewatch has exposed the racist source material that influenced Miller’s vision.

That source material, as laid out in his emails to Breitbart, includes white nationalist websites, a white genocide themed novel in which Indian men rape white women, xenophobic conspiracy theories and eugenics-era immigration laws that Adolf Hitler lauded in “Mein Kampf.”

This week, on behalf of The White House, in the shadow of The George Floyd Uprisings, a speech on race relations is being crafted by the sadistic hand of Stephen Miller.

IMAGINE CPD COMMITTED TO EQUAL JUSTICE

Defund The Police is a new catchphrase that has gained steam across the country. But what exactly does that mean?

For State Rep. LaShawn Ford, it means rebuilding the Chicago Police Department from the top down. “The system is broken, we’ve got to tear it down and replace it because taxpayer dollars are being wasted,” he said.

Police department budgets have ballooned across the nation in recent years. Out of a city total budget of $11.65 billion, CPD’s budget is $1.78 billion. Alderman Ray Lopez, who represents the 15th Ward, said it’s time for the City Council to review that budget.

“If we just pass things as is and never take a deep dive, we will never address the issues that have brought us to this point today, and that would be a shame,” he said.

HORRIFYING MILESTONE OF POLICE IMPUNITY

A grim milestone as more than 10,000 protesters are arrested in America.

This only further reveals the oppressive nature of the police and the state, neither of which has any interest beyond the perpetuation of capitalist exploitation under stable conditions of enforced consent. It is imperative working people everywhere reject these authoritarian tactics.

And demand the release of all political prisoners without charges.

TAKE A KNEE, MR. PRESIDENT

House speaker Nancy Pelosi and congressional black caucus chairwoman Karen Bass tip-toed around questions about the movement to defund the police.

The Justice In Policing Act focuses on police reform rather than police defunding, which some criminal justice advocates have pushed for.

Pelosi said of the calls to shift police budgets to other government programs, “We could rebalance some of our funding to address those issues more directly.”

Bass noted the bill would not provide any new money to police departments and would allocate funds for community grants to potentially re-envision what policing could look like.

GO BIG OR GO HOME. MINNEAPOLIS GOES BIG!!!

A veto-proof majority of Minneapolis City Council members will announce their commitment to disbanding the city’s embattled police department, which has endured relentless criticism in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd.

“We’re here because we hear you. We are here today because George Floyd was killed by the Minneapolis Police. We are here because here in Minneapolis and in cities across the United States it is clear that our existing system of policing and public safety is not keeping our communities safe,” Minneapolis City Council President Lisa Bender said Sunday.

“Our efforts at incremental reform have failed. Period.”
